Sports

Girl runningAthletics is a big part of life in the Upper School, and an important area for the development of character.

The Upper School Health and Physical Education Program is geared towards fostering a love of physical activity and health that will continue beyond a student’s years at Hawthorn.

Upper School students build upon skills already acquired in the Lower School, with continued opportunities to enjoy playing sports. They also participate in ‘boot camp’ workouts to learn about challenging themselves to attain a higher level of fitness.

Hawthorn’s athletics program goes beyond personal physical activity and health. Grade 8 students take a trip to Variety Village in Scarborough for an afternoon ‘outreach’ program. They tour the facility and have the opportunity to participate in wheelchair activities. Students gain awareness of the challenges faced by the physically handicapped and their capacity for achieving in sports.

Each year a self-defense workshop,“Total Defense,” is offered for grades 8 to 11 students. Senior students have the opportunity to attend Sunnybrook & Women’s College Health Sciences Centre's program P.A.R.T.Y. (Preventing Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth).

Camp

Upper School students begin each year by going to camp for two days and nights. At Camp students are challenged to develop themselves both physically and socially. Some activities at Camp include high and low ropes courses, canoeing, archery, cooperative games, orienteering, wall climbing, and nature hiking, as well as overnight tent adventures for grades 11 and 12.

Extra-Curricular Sports

Educating the whole person is part of Hawthorn’s philosophy of education. Extra-curricular sports provide opportunities for students to develop their physical capacities, as well as providing balance to the rigor of academics and an arena for character development.

Objectives of Hawthorn’s Extra-Curricular sports program are:
  • To acknowledge the importance of participation in extra-curricular sports as part of the development of the whole person and to provide students with the opportunity to experience this participation
  • To provide opportunities for participants and spectators to develop in character through good sportsmanship and through school spirit
  • To provide a program where students may develop their knowledge and understanding of a sport, improve their technical skills and pursue excellence in that area while maintaining an acceptable standard in other important areas of life
