Parents

Because Hawthorn views parents as the primary educators of their children, parent involvement in the school is essential. The particular expression of values and ethical conduct put forth by the school must find an echo in the home, particularly through parents’ personal effort to bring the Hawthorn vision to life. As indicated in our Principles, "Substantial parental involvement is essential and expected. To safeguard and promote the unity of the family and the coherence of the educational endeavour, the school also contributes to the formation of the parents and teachers." Hawthorn’s Vision is articulated in our Mission Statement, Goal, Principles and Operating Characteristics.

Recapturing the Joy of Parenting

In September 2007 Hawthorn introduced a new program for Junior School, Grade 1, 2 and 3 parents— monthly “coffee sessions” on Recapturing the Joy of Parenting. The informative and interactive sessions bring parents together to discuss topics of interest to every parent with young children. Some examples of themes being covered are: new ways of taking the battle out of bedtime, how to bring success into your child’s life, and knowing your child’s personality.

Communication

  Parent Activities

Hawthorn has a unique arrangement for working with all of our parents. This arrangement goes beyond a typical parents’ association.

Five Parent Coordinators facilitate the participation of parents in the life of the school. Monthly communications meetings with Class Coordinators (parent representatives for each grade level) are key to making parent involvement a priority, and offer a valuable opportunity for parents to better acquaint themselves with the school, develop friendships, and choose social activities for their classes.

Fundraising
  Gala: Karen and girls
Hawthorn’s two main fundraising events are the Fall Golf Tournament and Dinner, and the Gala and Silent Auction in the spring. Both events are great opportunities to support the school and come together as a community. Hawthorn’s Annual Fund Campaign gives parents and the community a chance to support the unique educational experience Hawthorn offers.
