Sports

Girl hanging from high ropeThe main goal of the Lower School Health and Physical Education Program is to foster a love of wellness and physical activity that will continue beyond a student’s years at Hawthorn.

Students are introduced to and participate in a wide variety of team and individual activities spanning beyond the common team sports. They are also provided with the tools to make healthy choices in terms of nutrition and personal wellness.

The curriculum is enhanced with activities such as skating, swimming, gymnastics and dance, that give students opportunities to use facilities outside of the school and to have the benefit of learning from specialized instructors.

By the end of grade 7 students will:
  • have a good knowledge of health and physical activity practices that will help her to care for and to respect her body
  • have had the opportunity to learn about the history and the rules of many sports
  • have participated in a wide variety of physical activities
  • will know how to swim, how to ice skate and how to do basic gymnastics exercises like rolls and cartwheels
  • will have the skills required to participate confidently in a recreational game of common team sports

Camp

Lower School students go to camp for a day in the first week of school. At Camp students are challenged to develop themselves both physically and socially. Camp activities may include archery, canoeing, cooperative games, low ropes/high ropes challenge, hiking, swimming, nature study, etc.

Extra-Curricular Sports

Educating the whole person is part of Hawthorn’s philosophy of education. Extra-curricular sports provide opportunities for students to develop their physical capacities, as well as providing balance to the rigor of academics and an arena for character development.

Objectives of Hawthorn’s Extra-Curricular sports program are:

  • To acknowledge the importance of participation in extra-curricular sports as part of the development of the whole person and to provide students with the opportunity to experience this participation
  • To provide opportunities for participants and spectators to develop in character through good sportsmanship and through school spirit
  • To provide a program where students may develop their knowledge and understanding of a sport, improve their technical skills and pursue excellence in that area while maintaining an acceptable standard in other important areas of life
